Civil Society in Zimbabwe: Between Imperialism and Mugabe

Friday, July 26, 2002 - 12:56 PM

The Red Side
Sustaining a vibrant civic movement in neo-liberal post election Zimbabwe is a nightmare. What’s more the people of Zimbabwe may have to inhabit this nightmare for the few more years that the current regime may still retain power. An effective confrontation of the complex challenges facing civil society in contemporary Zimbabwe requires an exhaustive examination of the current crisis. These factors include the agendas of the funders and the funded groups; the funding itself; the nature of its availability and the political and legal environment it dictates.

Thursday, July 25, 2002 - 02:07 PM

Scene Reports
Wassup all you punkers!

Big gig coming up on Saturday for all the punkers out there. We got some amazing punk bands playing at Burn and I think after all the moaning going on about how punk is going nowhere I think we should all be there. My personal favourites, Sibling Rivalry, are gonna be and these guys rock so anyone missing out is seriously, missing out!

See you all there!

Hey everyone

I got in some new local stock. You should really check out the new Neshamah (awesome! awesome!). There's also a whole bunch of other news......

ATTENTION DURBAN!

My band (Pet Flyz) will be playing at Burn in Durban this coming Saturday (27th of July). I will most probably be bringing some Nifty stock to sell at the show.

Please go and download our updated catalogue and check it out. If there's anything you'd like to buy, let me know before the weekend so
that I can be sure to bring it along to the show for you!

A punk manifesto.

This essay was written by Greg Graffin of Bad Religion. I thought I would post it in the light of the recent "what is punk" debates I have seen everwhere.
This is just another perspective on the whole issue.
Enjoy.

Distro News
Hey hey. Check out all this new stuff I got in this week yo!

Melt banana - Speak squeak creak CD R90
For those of you who don't know this band, they have been going since the early-nineties, are from Japan, and play probably the most experiMENTAL, innovative Punk rock you have ever heard in your entire freakin' live. This is a 2000 re-release of a 1994 classic. High pitched guitar sound, with crazy fretboard slidings, insanely fast and varied Punk drumming (with crazy beats all over the place) accompanied with the female vocals of Yako will make you ***** your pants. Features 24 songs in total.

The filthy three threaten the earth summit

Monday, July 22, 2002 - 01:26 AM

Green Side - Local
World leaders will gather in Johannesburg, South Africa, this August for the Earth Summit - an event meant to spark new commitments and action to save the environment and its people.
However, governments - led by the "filthy three": US, Australia, and Canada - are selling out. They're working overtime to ensure the summit fails to deliver any real commitments on key global issues such as water, energy, health, agriculture and biodiversity.
