Is it possible to have good without evil?
Wednesday, January 17, 2001 - 03:43 AM
Good question. Here are some thoughts about how that might relate to our issues...---
Perceptually, there can be no light without dark. That is, we need to know moral contrasts before we can perceive a 'moral dimension' or 'act morally'.
Psychologically, there is no way we are going to 'educate out the evil' in people's minds. We all experience times when we feel like killing someone, or are tempted to 'get by with' something that might benefit us in the short term.
---
Any 'future utopia' which does not recognize these things will either (1) never happen, or (2) be based on denial. ...

Why we don't need the police
Wednesday, January 17, 2001 - 03:37 AM
On the 24th November my Ford Cortina station wagon was stolen in the early hours of the morning from my house in Silverton, Pretoria. The police opened a docket on the theft. The local private visible policing service could not help.
I asked some of my comrades in Mamelodi to help me find the vehicle.
In early December I heard that a certain local car thief called "gloveman" who had written-off his previous Ford Cortina station wagon in an accident was now driving a cream coloured Ford Cortina station wagon...

LILO
Wednesday, January 17, 2001 - 03:33 AM
BACKGROUNDAlt-country/lo-fi rock band lilo is made up of two slanted and enchanted Durban fellows Alexander Sudheim and Graeme Barnes. Songwriter-in-chief Sudheim has been penning twisted tunes for many years, recording them on a 4-track and performing them in as many unlikely venues as possible, including parking garages, ice-skating rinks, Spanish roadsides, playgrounds and parties He also plays on "proper" stages in clubs and bars and festivals and such. Graeme "bottleneck" Barnes majestically fills his duties as king of the heartbreak slide guitar.
The object of the music is a kind of off-kilter story telling which has been variously described as broken-toothed mountain music, lo-fi alt-country-rock, imploded prairie poems, trail dust anthems, dirt road ditties and useless junk. ...

Long Live Rock
Tuesday, January 16, 2001 - 02:53 PM
For all the ink that's been spilled about how we're living in a cultural moment dominated by bland, corporate pop music purchased by 11-year-olds; for every faux-obituary that's been written for two guitars, a bass and drums; for every profile that has for the sake of moving units downgraded U2's life mission from relieving Third World countries of their nightmarish debt to making the world safe for semi-tuneful wailing over guitar sonics; one fact stands in complete and utter opposition. On any individual stretch of I-70 between Baltimore and Cove Fort, Utah, at any time of the day, one need only begin turning the FM radio dial from 88.1 toward 107.9 to find someone, somewhere, playing a Bad Company song.Posted by punky

What it Takes to be World Class
Tuesday, January 16, 2001 - 02:52 PM
What kind of city do we want Cape Town to be? Who do we want to run it and what happens to the losers in the relentless quest to become a competitive, world-class urban centre? These questions lie at the heart of next week's local government election, and will have a great influence on the future of the city and its people.Posted by punky
