Can Socialists Be Happy?

Wednesday, August 18, 2004 - 07:05 AM

The Red Side

The thought of Christmas raises almost automatically the thought of Charles Dickens, and for two very good reasons. To begin with, Dickens is one of the few English writers who have actually written about Christmas. Christmas is the most popular of English festivals, and yet it has produced astonishingly little literature. There are the carols, mostly medieval in origin; there is a tiny handful of poems by Robert Bridges, T.S. Eliot, and some others, and there is Dickens; but there is very little else. Secondly, Dickens is remarkable, indeed almost unique, among modern writers in being able to give a convincing picture of happiness.

Settling for the System

Wednesday, August 04, 2004 - 01:03 PM

The Red Side
Although for many of us the last four years have brilliantly demonstrated the undemocratic nature of American democracy, it seems that some radicals have missed their cues. Presented with endemic alienation as a result of the failure of American political structures, most strikingly expressed in the 2000 election, many activists have actually chosen to channel residual anger into the very system that generated it.

The name intregued me, and so I investigated only to find the most blatent racism I've come across in a long time.

South Africa's Potential

Friday, July 09, 2004 - 11:57 AM

The Red Side
South Africa today is economically freer than it was under apartheid, but its economic growth continues to be slow. To generate faster growth, the African National Congress must overcome its resentment of the free market. The ANC government must also get serious about protecting the life and property of South Africa's citizens.

PRO GEORGE BUSH PUNKS!!!

Wednesday, July 07, 2004 - 01:24 PM

The Red Side
Meet the pro-Bush punks
The most anti-establishment of music genres is being used in support of the US Republican party. Dorian Lynskey reports

One would have thought punk's capacity to shock was exhausted when, in the 1980s, GG Allin defecated on stage and either ate the result or flung it at the audience. Today, punk has come to mean safe, multiplatinum groups such as Blink-182 and Green Day, and Ashton Kutcher playing pranks on celebrities on MTV.

Defending Michael Moore (This guy shouldn't need defending)

Monday, June 14, 2004 - 08:02 AM

The Red Side
What's up? Here's some writing I did. Feedback would be awesome. Any suggestions of people that might be interested in publishing work like this? Ignore references to time. I tried sending it to places. The only person that responded was Tat Wolfen... (Tat?)

“And now I can’t sleep from years of apathy,
all because I read a little Noam Chomsky,
I’m eating vegetation cuz a fast food nation,
I wear uncomfortable shoes cuz a globalisation,
I’m watching Michael Moore expose the awful truth,
I’m listening to Public Enemy and Reagan Youth.”

Animal farm as an allegory for right now

Wednesday, June 02, 2004 - 04:02 PM

The Red Side
Before I had even read George Orwell’s short novel masterpiece, Animal farm, I was well aware of its legacy and even knew the famous line, “All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others”. First published in 1945 Orwell’s allegorical Animal Farm is so often pigeonholed by literal and limiting interpretations that belie its scale and in turn miss out on its central, multi-applicable, universal message, namely that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

YOUR VOTE MAKES YOU A SLAVE

Wednesday, April 21, 2004 - 01:23 PM

The Red Side
With the general elections passed and the ANC winning by a landslide - not suprisingly - I think our country is in for a ride of misfortune. How can anyone still trust or believe in a party run by lies and hate? The sad realisation that occurs to me is that most people vote simply to say they did, not because they understand what a democratic system represents or enforces in their daily lives.

Now the votes have been tallied - Let's talk

Wednesday, April 21, 2004 - 12:35 PM

The Red Side
The votes have been tallied after some really peaceful elections in South Africa. The IEC is satisfied with how the elections were conducted. Yet, how will life as we know it change? Will things just remain the same. The ANC has won a landslide victory, so how can the minorities and the alienated feel included in the democracy or even have their say. Is South Africa heading the same way as Zim as some people are saying?
